The last headphone you will ever purchase

The last headphone you will ever purchase

Why write this post?

I am here to profess to the awesomeness that is the “Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Wireless Headphone, Noise Cancelling”.  No doubt, this is a commitment, I have never spent this much on a set of headphones before, but I knew it was a good investment when I did it.  This post for the person who will also rationalize if getting this headphone is worth it. Let set this up though for those unfamiliar with this headphone; Bose QuietComfort 35 since the Series 1 [I believe] set the benchmark for what Noise Cancelling should be (and here is the key) without sacrificing on the audio quality as a byproduct of its Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) technology.

The purchasing decision

Bose is not unique in delivering quality sound and ANC, there are quiet a few players out there, there’s:

  • Sony WH-1000XM2
  • Bowers and Wilkins PX
  • AKG N60NC
  • Philips Fidelio NC1

and the Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC to name a few.  For me, and my usage the choice was clear, but first you need to get a better understanding of my perceived needs as I assessed them.  In my mind, here is what I thought about:

My primary need is for when I am onsite at customer site and I need to drown out all the background noise and chatter. If you are a consultant that goes to different job sites, you know the temptation for folks to just come up and start conversations with you as the ‘new person’, while they will undoubtedly go back to their desk and settle in, you as the consultant have a rolling set of visitors to your cube or office, employing the technique of the headphone over the ear with the green ANC lit, wards away even the chattiest of the group.

Secondary need is for my plane rides, not only does the humming of the plane can be daunting, but there is the risk of that screaming baby/toddler to contend with. My third and final need was for the occasional headphone calls either on Skype, GoTo Meeting or the phone itself.  You will note that listening to music is not a need, for me it’s a nice to have, so the ANC is more of the factor for me than the audio quality. So while folks will argue with me about lets say Sennheiser who may have a much better audio quality, I am pretty pleased with Bose since I’m not that much of an audiophile.  I also timed my purchase which was now 2 Christmas ago in the holiday season when there was a sale, I encourage you to find a sale and also not pay full MSRP.

My thoughts

Well not only mine, I’ve sat on planes before where random strangers [well more accurately.. the person sitting next to me] will ask the question “…so how do you like those headphones” and in typical fashion I will let them borrow it.  I will usually turn off the ANC switch before hand and turn some music on, next I will give it to them… of course it blows their minds… then I will tell them to flip the ANC switch on.. then you can see faces melt J finally I turn off the music and they bask in the silence that is ANC.  My thoughts are… everyone gets that for a few minutes, I now have that .. ALL THE TIME. Get this headphone if you like me check those boxes I laid out above.

I hope you enjoy this post, please leave me some comments if you found this of interest. Thank you for your time.
