Used Apple Pay Cash for the First time today

Used Apple Pay Cash for the First time today

Why write this post?

I had a first today, and an unexpected first nonetheless.  I had a mate today text to wish me a Happy Birthday, albeit a couple days late, its always pleasant to receive those well wishes.  During our text exchange, I saw a dark text appear in focus with the apple logo, a dollar amount and a button to “accept” with the message to go buy a round of drinks.  Totally unexpected and unaware, I slowly realized that I had entered into the world of Apple Pay Cash.

With some firsts, there may be some setup that’s required and this is no different.  This post is going to showcase my own experience, which admittedly may be different from yours, but there was some initial confusion on my part.  In the end it took about 10 minutes to finally have the monies accepted, BUT… 7 of those minutes was on the phone with my bank verifying my account information.

Apple Pay Cash Money Just Showing Up

As aforementioned, I wasn’t expecting someone to just “text” or “iMessage” me money, so when the text exchange appeared I was taken aback. After the initial shock wore off, I clicked on the “Accept” button

When I clicked on the button, I was greeted with the “Apple Pay Cash” setup screen that called out the dollar amount with a continue button at the bottom.

Once the continue button was clicked, the next screen presented was “Add Card” screen which surprised me a bit.  It then dawned on me that there probably needs to be a way to actually ‘receive’ the monies sent… (more on this later)

In actuality, I already have cards setup with Apple Pay but those are Credit Cards and not Debit Cards i.e. no Checking or Savings account to bind to.  So I took the picture of my card and filled out the additional details that was required.  At that time I thought I was complete… Not!

Verify your Account in Apple Pay Cash

Upon completion of adding my debit card I saw a link alerting me that I needed to verify my account information. The transitioned screen had the ability to call my bank, which I did. To my surprise, once I explained the sequence of events that led me to calling the bank to the bank customer support teller on the phone, she understood immediately. This leads me to believe that my experience is not that uncommon.  The bank customer support rep asked me a few questions, verified a few information and told me that the Apple Pay is now ready for me, low and behold the minute I got off the phone, the screen also indicated as such.

Completing the Apple Pay Cash gift experience

To wrap up this experience, I will admit that throughout the clicking on the continue button, adding the card, up to the time I called the bank rep, I kept going back to the text message and clicking the “accept” button, in my experience, it would accept the click but didn’t do anything else.  It wasn’t until I got off the phone with the bank rep that I was able to click the “accept button” and it finally took.

What do I mean by ‘finally took’, well the “accept” button went away and all that was left in the text message was the fact I was given monies through Apple Pay Cash.

I finally got my money from Apple Pay Cash

In conclusion,  if I had to grade the entire experience I would give it 3 out of 5.  I say that because [and again qualifying it with my individual experience] there is quite a bit of assumption on Apple part when engaging with the recipient of the Apple Pay Cash. I say that because the majority of my delays stemmed from the fact I did not have a Debit Card tied to Apple Wallet, only Credit Cards. As such, Apple Pay Cash did not have a way to accept those monies.  I completely get it, but that is a dependency that may have unfortunate incidences. What if I didn’t have a Savings or Checking Account, does that mean I cannot use (or to be more specific) Accept monies using Apple Pay Cash?

I am pretty sure if I already had a Debit Card bound to my Apple Wallet, this entire experience would have taken seconds to complete. That may be the experience of quite a bit of you reading this post if you have already used Apple Pay Cash. If however you were like me, who did not, after the elation of getting “FREE MONEY”, you may find yourself grappling with exactly ‘how’ to get that promised money into your albeit virtual hands.

Moving forward however I do have a Debit Card and can now ‘pay it forward’ by gifting other Apple Pay Cash… unless I remove the card.  Debit cards in the wild is a frightening option for me, I seldom use them in online activities.
